We Are The City

It was in 2008 when highschool friends Cayne McKenzie, Andrew Huculiak and David Menzel decided to form a band. Their self-called ‘experimental pop’ project, some call it prog-rock, runs after the name We Are The City. Within 1 year after moving from Kelowna (CAN) to Vancouver they released their first record ‘In A Quiet World’. They started touring with this record and applied for the prestigious PEAK Performance Project contest. Apparently this was really successfull: they got the funding with just the right amount of money to get started with their second record called ‘Violent’. However, all band members are not just talented musicians but also ambitious writers and film makers: Violent was followed by the feature-length film Violent written by We Are the City and filmed by Vancouver’s Amazing Factory Productions in Norway.

As soon as they walked into the beautiful café Loislane in Neukölln it was clear that the next hour is going to be filled with laughter and fun stories. For example: Drummer Andrew spontaneously added some spoon-glass-cup-drumming in ‘King David’ which made it hard for Cayne and David as well as for us to stay calm and focused. Besides all the jokes and fun moments one thing was clear at all time: these three guys are a creative superteam that figured out out how to combine aggressive distortion with gentle acoustic plucking or beautiful piano sounds with experimental drum solos. Their tender voices and harmonies are probably causing the effect that one describes their sound rather as dreamy than loud.
